Accelerated Reader

17th Mar 2020

Please find below details regarding Accelerated Reader that was sent home earlier this academic year. Further information can be found on the attached letter.

What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children's independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.)

Accelerated Reader gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set targets and direct ongoing reading practice.

Children using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.

Teachers and librarians help your child choose books at an appropriate reading level that are challenging without being frustrating, ensuring that your child can pass the quiz and experience success.

What happens Next?

On Monday pupils will be given their ZPD which will allow them to select books in school, at home, in shops or at the library.

ZPD is short for the Zone of Proximal Development and is the range of books that will challenge a child without causing frustration or loss of motivation. During November the children completed Star Reading tests to establish their ZPD.

During December children will be encouraged to select books, read them and take challenges online via the link on the homepage of our website. They can also read some of their own books at home, as a parent you can check that titles are within the appropriate ZPD range. Use the website www.arbookfind.co.uk to check the level of a book.
