Buoyed Up @Work

10th Apr 2025

P7 had a fascinating day at W5 Life Building on Tuesday, where they had the opportunity to hear from 4 different marine businesses - ESB, MJM Marine, North Channel Wind and Stena.

The varied and interactive sessions ranged from: ESB teaching them about how tides work, ocean currents and the fascinating Irish ocean life; MJM Marine introducing them to lots of skills and trades involved in looking after ships; North Channel looked at what wind turbines do at sea, how they are made and generate power; and Stena explained what it means to be a cadet and to work in engineering and on deck at sea.

Each session had live demonstrations or practical experiments ranging from a simple, yet brilliant experiment explaining ocean currents, using hot/cold water and food colouring; building mini wind turbines; designing and costing a bridge; and trying out some of the safety gear that is worn aboard ships.

As pupils are about to embark on the next stage of their education, this was an ideal time to showcase the huge variety of marine jobs that are available and to encourage them to think about their future options.

Many thanks goes to Laurence Brady from the Sir Thomas Lipton Foundation for organising this event, plus all the companies who took part. This was greatly enjoyed by our pupils. Not only did Castle Gardens attend, but we joined P7 pupils from Kilcooley Primary School, Euston Street Primary and also Longstone School, some of whom have been part of the Buoyed Up project for a number of years now.

Castle Gardens very much looks forward to the next part of Buoyed Up - sailing @ Donaghadee Sailing Club.
